HISTORY
Thanks to Alexander of Macedon
Even though pepper is nowadays a commonplace in every household, it has not always been so. For thousands of years it was the privilege of the rich, for a long time even a currency. And although it is originally from India, thanks to the merits of Alexander of Macedon, we Europeans are also spiced with it.
CONCLUSIONS
Dried pepper tree berries
Black pepper tree (Piper nigrum) is a climbing plant native to India. It is especially sought after for its spicy berries, which are harvested unripe and green. The resulting dark colour is only obtained after ten days of drying.
Spicy piperine
The power of black pepper lies in the synergistic combination of many naturally occurring substances. However, the pungent alkaloid piperine is considered to be the key. [1, 2]
